Bookmakers

As gambling is quite a popular past time in the British Isles you'll have probably noticed that there are typically several bookmakers present in even relatively small towns. In a bookmaker's you can place bets on a variety of different sports, although it is usually horse racing that is bet on, as the sport has a long history of being connected with gambling. However, most well established bookies will give their customers and opportunity to place bets on a huge range of events, not strictly sports. It's very common for people to place bets on who they think will win the X-Factor and similar things.

As with all businesses that have a lot of cash on the premise then security measures in a bookmaker's shop is tight. They are at risk of being robbed, so there are plenty of preventative security measures in place to make sure the premises are secure. Security shutters will usually be in place to keep the property safe from a break in at night. Heavy, steel security shutters pulled down over windows and doors can make a break in practically impossible. Also, CCTV cameras are likely to be used in and outside of the premise. Cameras will are used as more of a deterrent, but they have been shown to be effective, so it makes sense to use them. Also an alarm system with a direct link to the police will usually be in place. This alarm can be activated by staff in the event of a robbery.
